WORDS: PAUL McKELLAR
FROM: CALIFORNIA, USA | FOR FANS OF: MOVEMENTS, TROPHY EYES
Hailing from San Diego, California come the USA’s hottest new alternative band, the unique and intense five-piece “Ikana”, who strive in creating music that forms a strong “feeling of camaraderie” and also not allowing their music to be pigeon-holed into a certain genre by not “confining [them]selves in the song writing process”.
Ikana “try to help the listener connect with their music on a personal level” by letting things come naturally whilst using “pretty direct” & challenging lyrical content that focus on issues such as “struggles with mental health”. Having these relatable and personalised themes within their music is one of Ikana’s unique qualities that have seen the band gain attention from all around the global alternative music scene with the band being mentioned sounding sonically reminiscent & stylistically similar to heavyweight peers such as Trophy Eyes and Can’t Swim.
“WE WANT THE LISTENER TO CONNECT TO OUR MUSIC ON A PERSONAL LEVEL…”
By embracing these messages, the band focus intensely on writing “honest music that inspires as many people as possible” and have managed to already achieve this in their short time together by gaining a strong following locally within San Diego. With the city already being famous for bringing bands like Blink-182 & Pierce The Veil to the forefront of alternative music, Ikana looks set to follow in their footsteps having formed a strong network within the local music scene of “so many friends and amazing local bands”. This togetherness is reinforced by the band stating “Weve never felt like it was a competition to see who can get to the top first, we all support and help bring each other up”.
Despite the challenges faced throughout the 2020 Ikana with the global pandemic affecting both the wider music industry & the band itself, they have consistently managed to release captivating music that has received acclaim form fans & the wider alternative music scene whilst not being able to meet or perform in person for any prospective listeners/fans. After speaking to the band, you instantly get an understanding of how important this connection is for them with “The music being what links us all together to feel something, whether it be that small feeling of comfort when listening to our songs at home, or that rush of adrenaline when experiencing it live”. This value is one of the bands major inspirations especially within a year that became prevalent with lack of connection or communal/social meetings with Ikana realising this and making sure their music helps bridge the divide because “music is that bridge that connects us all”.
“MUSIC IS THE BRIDGE THAT CONNECTS US ALL.”
This widespread acclaim has seen listeners quickly latch onto the band’s engaging, captivating & unique sound. This has translated to their recently released new single “Anywhere But Here” with the response so far being incredibly positive with Ikana stating it has “honestly been received better than our whole previous catalogue”.
With 2020 behind us and the long awaited & welcomed news that a vaccine is gearing towards distribution & the return of live music being around the corner, fans can look forward to seeing & hearing more from Ikana with the band mentioning they “can’t wait to share with everyone what we’ve been working on all year” and the excitement of getting to possibly “travel to some places we’ve never been” and “playing to anyone and everyone” possible. The band have also kicked off 2021 with the exciting announcement of their new single “Cold One” being released on the 1st of January, whilst also exclusively revealing to us that they are planning to release their first full record in the next year with it being slated for “an early/spring 2021 release”. With all this in the pipeline everything seems geared for 2021 to be the year in which Ikana truly breakthrough as the next great band from San Diego within the alternative music scene.
