WORDS: ROB KENT

The Dillinger Escape Plan was a band that changed the metalcore genre. But in 2017 and twenty strong years, the band sadly decided that their artistic output within Dillinger had come to end. While fronting the band Puciato earned an honourable reputation for himself as a versatile and powerful force within music. Three years on Puciato openly speaks about how being humble will make one’s presence last a lifetime.

I don’t sit around too much thinking about what makes me have any sort of staying power or ability as opposed to someone else. I just do what I do and have always naturally had blinders on as to any notion of what I’m ‘supposed’ to do, or what anyone else has done. I just do what feels correct to me, and always have. “ He muses. “

“I don’t sit around too much thinking about what makes me have any sort of staying power or ability as opposed to someone else.

I’m aware that I’m “different” in some regards, mainly because I don’t give a shit about a lot of things that a lot of people do give a shit about, as far as “fitting in” and so forth, and I’m not fully ignorant as to having certain physical abilities vocally that I didn’t really ask for, as far as dynamic range and power and ability to emote. I am just really stubborn and really opinionated and really perfectionistic, brutally self-competitive, and really sensitive to my internal compass and emotions. So if you put all of that together with some sort of unasked for vocal ability or artistic sensibility you end up where I am now. I try to protect it and nurture it, without thinking about it. There’s a thin line between effective self-ownership and confidence, healthy awareness and disappearing in your ego”

Puciato has lived a life that is fast paced that allowed him to absorb vast amounts of human nature. Now, in a more relaxed chapter of his life, the vocalist reflects on his time spent interacting with a wide variety of humans. He gives his inner thoughts on whether the only person individuals truly know is themselves or not.

“I don’t give a shit about a lot of things that a lot of people do give a shit about, as far as “fitting in” and so forth…”

“People are so layered. Everyone is so deep, and everyone is hiding so much. True intimacy and transparency are so very difficult, but sometimes you have people in your life that know you, that you know, even if you don’t know everything about one another. You can feel them in different ways, and then the details of what happened in their day become a bit more trivial because you feel similar, you resonate.” He reflects. “Being a person is wild, consciousness is wild, connection is wild. I don’t know what this all is. We just woke up here one day. I think we’re all one consciousness making each other up to try and understand ourselves, trying to grow and evolve and get ready for whatever comes next. In that sense, we each already know everything about each other, and about ourselves, it’s all just revealing itself over time”

Measuring success is also a factor that comes into play in everyone’s life in some way or another, including Puciatos. The vocalist leaves his final comments on how goals and achievements in life are weighted differently for everyone and how his own vision of himself and his goals have evolved.

“Am I making the world around me better? Am I developing as a person in a way that prepares me for eventual harmonious death?

“Everyone’s got their own personal measures of success, and yes of course they develop and change over time. I always have little goals, long term goals, and then there are less tangible more inward goals, like psychological and spiritual growth and self-understanding.” He concludes when reflecting on the growth he’s had with his new record, Child Soldier: Creator Of God. “Am I making the world around me better? Am I developing as a person in a way that prepares me for eventual harmonious death? Am I decreasing the amount of pain I’m causing and increasing the amount of love I’m capable of. And then of course there is artistic success, where I measure how I’m continuing my artistic journey in a way that feels honest and true to myself.”

Child Soldier: Creator Of God is out NOW.
