WORDS : KARLEY MYALL

My Chemical Romance, a band that reunited a huge fan base, that gave the word ‘emo’ a whole new definition. They immersed themselves into their distinctive alt-rock sound and completely stole the hearts of many. Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge was released in 2004 and continues to be one of their best albums.  With the black painted nails, the iconic red and black smokey eye and the excessive amounts of eyeliner, not to mention the incredible jacket that was worn in the Black Parade era. Either way, MCR had such a significant style and many of their fans took up the offer of embracing a similar style. The iconic four-piece is made up of Gerard Way on vocals, guitarists Ray Toro and Frank Iero and drummer Mikey Way.

MCR taught their audience that it’s perfectly fine not to be ok and that there’s nothing better than embracing your inner weirdo and embracing that

In 2013, MCR broke their tragic news to the world that it was officially the end of an era for them and their incredible music. As many fans’ hearts broke, last year they rose from the pit and gave their fan base hope for a reunion. In 2019 they officially announced they were getting back together, as many pulled out their crazy hair dye, their pencil black eyeliner and painted their nails very badly. The audience that MCR created reunited and many were absolutely made up with the news.

Many youngsters lived through the 2000s era knowing they could relish in My Chemical Romance’s music and have something to simply switch off and escape too. Throughout the 2000s alternative music was at its peak with many bands competing in such a barbaric industry. But, along came this absolutely insane outfit, who continues to have such a soft spot on many people’s hearts and have such a high place in music history.

MCR taught their audience that it’s perfectly fine not to be ok and that there’s nothing better than embracing your inner weirdo and embracing that. They have such a huge impact on their audience and the way they make the listener feel as they listen to their music. Once you throw yourself back into the old school album Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, you’re instantly hooked and you’re there getting lost in the music and completely going crazy with the dance moves and lip-syncing. Their music made the ones who felt they were different, feel like they had someone to look up too and a fanbase to call family. They truly inspired many and made everyone feel like the community they have will always welcome you. No matter your age, race, sexuality, religion they’d be there.

This collection was one that is filled with angsty teenage anthems, in-your-face instrumentals and the ever so enticing vocals

The album sold a total of one million copies, saw the front pages of many music magazines and completely blitzed the charts. This collection was one that is filled with angsty teenage anthems, in-your-face instrumentals and the ever so enticing vocals from Gerard Way himself. You can’t help but completely go nuts when you listen to their music, it has such an infectious and catchy melody that you can’t help but love.

Of course, like any anthology that MCR creates, it’s always pretty incredible. This one has some of the best songs they’ve ever done and one of them is still by far ‘I’m Not Okay (I Promise)’. Which is one of them, that you probably know word for word and one where the chorus just hits different. From the crazy good music video, with the messy hair, the black eyeshadow and of course the all black outfits. Not to mention, the real punk rock style music video, this song was for those who truly felt like at times they were not ok. But, through this, they showed their audience that that’s ok to feel like that.

My Chemical Romance is such a staple in the world of the music industry, one that we never want to lose. One of the most influential bands that truly made everyone who are fans of them love them that little bit more. They have such a huge love for their audience and a whole load of respect as they do for them.

Even after sixteen years, which still sounds crazy, this collection will send you right back to the days in high school where you’d be walking around at lunch with your headphones in listening to this exact album. Where you’d be buying multiple pencils to paint your eyes and not to mention the crazy amount of monster energy drinks. You’d be completely blown away by the incredible talent that MCR have and reminiscing on how much easier life was back then. MCR will always be a significant part of the music industry and one that created a huge movement and impact on many.
