FROM: GLASGOW, UK | FOR FANS OF: THRICE, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE

Hailing from Glasgow cinematic alternative arrangement Layaway have delivered a whole new dimension to the Scottish alt-rock scene, as the band put it “Keeping the foot to the floor and creating high quality content” since their emergency back in 2016. With a sound reminiscent of American rockers Thrice and Queens Of The Stone Age, it’s the Scotland born band’s epic and moody description that ultimately make Layaway’s sound a match made in music heaven.
Trying and failing is key, it’s what allowed us to find our footing and it’s been a journey that has helped us grow as a band and as people
Back in the early days of Layaway’s ascent to the top of the emerging talent coming out of the scene north of the UK for any band breaking out established acts play a prominent part in a groups growth, and for Layaway both individually and collectively their big name icons couldn’t be closer to home. “Biffy Clyro are a huge influence for us all. Twin Atlantic were really big for us too, they came out of nowhere and stood out against the grain. The Xcerts were a big influence for our drummer Euan. He still remembers seeing their video for “Just Go Home” on MTV2 back in the day and rushing to the other room to get a pen and paper to note down the song name so he remembered to look them up. Seeing where they are now after all this time getting bigger and better has been a big inspiration.”
It’s not only Layaway’s huge influences and their own trademark crunching sound that separates the collective from the crowd, it’s their in house style and do it yourself approach to making their music that has turned the tide from the group being passengers in terms of not having any musical direction to being the drivers of their sonically focused destiny, a time the quartet recalls stating “Trying and failing is key, it’s what allowed us to find our footing and it’s been a journey that has helped us grow as a band and as people. We went from literally throwing everything we had against the wall and seeing what would stick and often failing, to dialling in what we are and who we are.” It has been this process of artistic development that has allowed the band to find a sound that both resonates with themselves but remain instantly identifiable to fans and the wider music world.
People put too much stock in big contracts and often jump headfirst into something that’s not right for them. Ultimately you need to take your time, make your content, work hard and know that if you keep it up you will make the waves you’re looking for
In a business where 360 degree record contracts are fast becoming the record labels bait to lure in unsuspecting aspiring artists who dream of the illustrious all round recording contract but don’t consider the at times controlling and monetary implications such a deal would detail, when asked about what advice Layaway could lend to bands starting out today they talked about how “You have to create your own audience and following regardless of what you do. People put too much stock in big contracts and often jump headfirst into something that’s not right for them. Ultimately you need to take your time, make your content, work hard and know that if you keep it up you will make the waves you’re looking for.”
In this current new normal Layaway have had to adjust their lives to, it has given the group the opportunity to develop a sense of gratitude towards the stack of awesome achievements the band have under their belt which includes headlining the legendary Barrlowland’s Ballroom to locally playing an exclusive BBC Live Session. Ultimately, drummer Euan speaks on behalf of the band by saying “We just want to keep it going and keep moving up. We’re so happy to have gotten as far as we have, we’re just grateful to be here and we want to keep working hard and keep moving.” And with an upcoming epic alt rock visual currently being worked on remotely, it seems Layaway’s aspirations to keep on moving up are being put into good practice.
