Hailing from Baltimore and taking their name from the Lungfish song, Truth Cult are yet another band who’ve put their own unique twist on Hardcore. Baltimore has had a strong scene for a long time with vocalist Paris Roberts telling us “Punk and hardcore have been a staple for decades, but the Baltimore club and queer scene is especially what keeps this place bright” and Truth Cult cary the torch for the city.
Speaking on how the band have an advantage when it comes to song writing due to Truth Cult’s versatile sound, drummer Robin Zeijlon says “Truth Cult has a broader range of influences than my other bands and more wiggle room with different styles.”
I tie in my own feelings on the matter due to how my stars are aligned, and mention the ways of my reaction certain circumstances that happen in the songs
Guitarist Ian Marshall speaks of the work Truth Cult already have planned, stating, “We have another 4 songs that are recorded and should be coming out as a tape. We will hopefully compile both tapes on a 12” for Adagio 830 then hopefully play some European shows. Before covid we were a little over halfway done writing another LP so we will take our time tweaking that bad mother.” Paris adds to this, “We have a lot more songs we’re ready to unleash to the masses, and we are always ready to keep showing out, so maybe people will keep rocking with us through all this and come out to the gigs in 2025.”
Speaking on the lyrical content for Truth Cult, Paris says, “As far as my lyrical content goes, I just sort of write out my day to day experience and personalize my vices a bit, as well as mentioning stuff about astrology. For example, I talk mention burning a few times on the record— my astrological sign is Aries sun, Leo moon, and Virgo rising, so when I’m writing about my experiences, I tie in my own feelings on the matter due to how my stars are aligned, and mention the ways of my reaction certain circumstances that happen in the songs… I’m emotionally aware of myself, my surroundings, and my peers, so I find myself constantly keeping mental journals of turning points of my experiences. Take that, and mix it with some rock n’ roll bullshit, then you get some lyrics for the LP.”
Truth Cult are only on their second release and are clearly among the most interesting hardcore bands at the moment.
The band couldn’t be happier to be working with label Pop Wig, with Paris stating “Popwig has shown nothing but love since our demo came out on Advanced Perspective. I remember Justice hitting me on maybe IG like “yo, let me tell you something: that Truth Cult shit rocks.”
Paris adds, “We’ve each been playing in many bands before this, and we’ve all known each other for quite some time now, so the chemistry we had forming the band was able to form almost instantly. We each have our own personality to offer to the band.” Truth Cult are only on their second release and the band have shown heaps of passion and drive. They are are clearly among the most interesting hardcore bands at the moment.
Truth Cult are a fresh and intriguing bad, if you’re deliberating on checking them out Paris tells us “The way I describe our music to my family and random people that ask is “we sound like MC5 or Red Hot Chili Peppers.”
