WORDS: JO COSGROVE
Heart Like War are a band who seem to never rest for too long. Reforming in 2018, it looked to be a brand new project for the pop-punk trio. With frontman David Camarena on vocals and guitar, Jordan Calhoun on bass, and Anthony Canal on drums, they were ready for a brand new era from a fresh new start.
With bringing the band back, Canal has compared Heart Like War’s lifespan to “a TV show”: “New characters come in, some fade out but they story is still heading forward.” It was an easy process as he felt he “shared the same idea” with Camarena and it was go from that moment!
With this reformation, a new sound and a new direction was taking shape. With a whole team of songwriters now involved in the band, Canal has confirmed that the sound has changed “in the best way possible” and even discussed the first song they all wrote.
“I wrote the music and David wrote the lyrics,” Canal confirmed. “We are both strong writers together more than anything else.”
“seeing people react physically and emotionally to stuff we wrote is something we will never take for granted.”
This new sound is something extraordinary for the band. When describing it, bassist Calhoun put it in the best way: “Imagine if bands from the late 90s and early 2000s…were frozen in a time capsule released back into the world in 2018 and drank a lot of coffee.” That’s music the whole world wants to hear – and they’re enjoying it.
The guys have been able to tour outside of the US more recently, completing a tour in Japan, and have their sights set on bigger and better… “I would love to tour the UK”, Camarena happily shared. “This band is now fully committed to touring as full time as possible.”
International touring is what Canal calls “the most remarkable feeling ever…I remember David and I looking at each other when it first happened and I was like ‘Are you seeing this? How is this happening?’ That feeling is something that will always push us to keep doing this because seeing people react physically and emotionally to stuff we wrote is something we will never take for granted.”
“We are about being genuine and not hiding who we are, take us for what we are, imperfect humans who can help each other out..”
It’s truly something “remarkable”, there’s no denying this. But it’s not easy, and very few bands can break out and make it past their hometown, let alone their country. What’s the secret to this success?
Calhoun simply states it’s “networking, hard work, passion, [and] desire” – which Heart Like War really do succeed in. And this leads to the likes of touring Japan and hopefully the UK soon?
A big part of this is from allowing fans to watch as they grow and progress together as a new act all over again, and to be honest with them at every stage of this progression.
“I always believe in transparency,” Camarena states. “If we struggle as a band I want people to see and learn from that struggle, we like to help people and grow with them, just as we are…We are about being genuine and not hiding who we are, take us for what we are, imperfect humans who can help each other out.”
Out of all this – the songs, the work, the performing – what is the ultimate goal for the band? What’s the endgame with Heart Like War? “Reach people through meaningful lyrics….Take things full time as much as possible including more international touring to continue to gain support for what we do.”
