ARTIST: AGNOSTIC FRONT
TITLE: GET LOUD!
LABEL: NUCLEAR BLAST
WORDS: ROB KENT
New York Hardcore legends Agnostic Front are still releasing music, with this release now being their twelfth in their close to forty year career, it is a question whether the band should have stayed quiet and let their legacy remain rather than continue to be consistent with fresh material. Their early work was highly influential, however this record does nothing but tarnish their legacy and proves they should have called it a day, in terms of new releases, a long time ago.
Get Loud, is a combination of lazy guitar work, poor vocal performances and unimaginative rhythm sections that leaves for nothing but bland and undeveloped song writing to listen to. The album begins with the standard thrash crossover formula being played repeatedly, although this band paved the way for the sound many years ago, Agnostic Front doing this in 2019 is something that there is really no room for surrounding current music.
“The record continues in to the title track, which does feature some nice groove and is well crafted, but this pace slowly fades as the album progresses.”
The record continues in to the title track, which does feature some nice groove and is well crafted, but this pace slowly fades as the album progresses. Featureless and uninteresting lyrical content, that really feel like it has no message whatsoever and is just a string of cheesy one liners strung together, is very prominent on the later tracks on the record. Vocalist Roger Miret also sounds like he struggling to perform in the vocal booth on this record also, leaving not much promise for a good live performance on the touring cycle of this record. There is promise on some tracks, the track I remember features some good lyrics and interesting guitar playing and Urban Decay features some very nice melodic moments also. The last few tracks contain the same problems and make for a very tedious end to the record with nothing exciting happening in any of the tracks. Every track on this record shows exactly what the band did many years ago to stand out and pave the way for the new generation of bands to come, but hearing this sound recycled by Agnostic Front is 2019 is nothing exciting and has no relevance.
Competing with the modern scene this record can’t cope, although old school and long term fans of genre may hear elements that reminds them of a time where progression and development in hardcore was really taking off, this album falls fkat at a time when newer bands outshine this album with very little effort. However without Agnostic Front, bands and the scene would not exist today, so this band deserves respect and are legends no doubt, just them releasing music today isn’t called for.
“Get Loud showcases everything that made this band what they are and helped evolve the genre in to what we know today”
Overall it is nice to see Agnostic Front still alive and living for the genre and involved in the modern scene, but their new music really isn’t great and in their old age their live performance may be questionable also. Get Loud showcases everything that made this band what they are and helped evolve the genre in to what we know today, however its content really doesn’t make an impact anymore. Agnostic Front are hardcore legends for eternity, but new music from them is something that maybe shouldn’t have happened.
