FROM: CALIFORNIA | FOR FANS OF: CITIZEN, MOVEMENTS
When it comes to naming one place on the globe that seems to churn out some splendidly sunny pop punk that brightens up the most miserable weather all year round, it’s California. Quickly turning heads with their catchy and anthemic choruses and giant hooks, we sit down with More Than A Moment to talk all things pop punk, supporting your local scene, and more.
FIRST OFF WITHOUT USING ANY GENRES HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE SOUND OF MORE THAN A MOMENT?
Theatrical and larger than life
WHY THE BAND NAME MORE THAN A MOMENT? IS IT INFLUENCED BY THE IDEA OF PERMANENCE RATHER THAN JUST BEING A FLASH IN THE PAN KIND OF BAND?
Oliver came up with the name after listening to the song Stuck In Love by William Beckett along with the idea of never settling and taking whatever next step we can in our career
RIGHT AFTER SHOOTING YOUR PROMOS YOU WERE INVOLVED IN A CAR ACCIDENT, AND IT SEEMED THAT THE HARDSHIP SURROUNDING THIS REALLY SOLIDIFIED THE FRIENDSHIP OF YOU GUYS AS A BAND. WOULD YOU SAY THAT STRUGGLES LIKE THIS REALLY PROVE NOT JUST HOW CLOSE YOU ARE AS A BAND BUT ALSO WHO YOUR FRIENDS ARE?
Absolutely an experience like that shows you that life can be taken away from you at any moment so it makes working together even more special than it was before
TROY, YOU YOURSELF ARE ALSO A PROMOTER IN THE CALIFORNIA SCENE AND ARE ALWAYS PUSHING OTHER BANDS. HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO NOT ONLY HAVE A STRONG BOND WITH YOUR OWN BAND MATES BUT ALSO THE OTHER BANDS IN YOUR SCENE?
WHAT MADE YOU ACTIVELY CHOSE TO BECOME SO INVOLVED IN YOUR LOCAL SCENE AND HOW IMPORTANT IS IT FOR OTHERS TO FOLLOW SUIT?
It helps you make friends and connections with people who are trying to do what you are doing and that brings a sense of togetherness to the people that are around you. It also makes getting on shows easier which gives you a better chance at succeeding
AT THE SAME TIME THEY SAY ONE OF THE HARDEST ASPECTS OF BREAKING AS A BAND IN AMERICA IS DUE TO THE SHEER SIZE OF THE PLACE, AND OBVIOUSLY CALIFORNIA IS HUGE (BIGGER THAN THE WHOLE OF THE UK). HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED GOING OUT OF STATE TO BUILD THE BAND’S FAN BASE?
Absolutely there would never be a time that we would turn down a tour. It helps you make connections with other bands that aren’t in your state and that’s always important
THEY SAY THAT SUBCONSCIOUSLY THAT WE’RE ALL A PRODUCT OF OUR ENVIRONMENT. HAVE YOU BEEN AT ALL INFLUENCED BY THE BANDS AND ARTISTS SURROUNDING YOU?
We are inspired by being able to share the stage and make friendships with people in our local music scene but musically we try to do our own thing
YOU ALSO HAIL FROM A STATE THAT IS SEEN AS ‘THE AMERICAN SCENE’ AND IS HEAVILY SURROUNDED BY THE MUSIC INDUSTRY – DOES THIS AT ALL DRIVE THE BAND’S DIY ETHIC?
We are doing what we have to do to get our start in a costly industry but we are more than open to the idea of working with other talented people in the future of our career. DIY is not something that we are glued to
LET’S TALK THE EP (WHICH IS SOLID BTW) – WHAT GOES ON BEHIND CLOSED CURTAINS. WHAT INFLUENCED THE TITLE?
Oliver comes from a theatrical family so when he was writing lyrics that have to do with his anxiety he tied the two together and came up with the idea that these problems were what was going on behind the closed curtains of his mind but the title is really up to personal interpretation
FROM THE LYRICAL CONTENT THERE SEEMS TO BE THE CONCEPT OF HIDING AWAY WHO YOU BOTH ARE AND HAVING TO ‘PUT ON A FACE’ – DO YOU FIND THAT HAVING MUSIC AS AN OUTLET ALLOWS YOU TO BE TRUE TO YOURSELF?
Music is who we are and without it our lives would have no purpose
MEMBERS OF MTAM ARE ALSO IN A HEAVIER AND MORE HARDCORE STYLED BAND, BRAVEHEART. HOW DO YOU DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN WHAT SONG GOES TO WHAT BAND? DOES HAVING BOTH BANDS ALLOW YOU TO EXPAND YOUR CREATIVITY EVEN FURTHER?
The writing process is completely different for each band but having two different bands with two different writing styles and music styles helps us expand our creativity and keep things interesting
FINALLY, WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM MTAM OVER THE NEXT YEAR?
Hard work and starting to spread the message that we want to share with the world
