Twitching Tongues are no strangers to uncertainty. Indeed, their passage has been built upon just that.
This time ‘’It feels right’’ front man Colin Young announces ‘’With creative and live elements we’ve never had before, it feels like we are the Twitching Tongues we’ve always hoped to be.’’ Lineup changes can be the making of breaking of a band, but it looks like Twitching Tongues are here to stay.
There’s a lot to be said for an album title. When Hatebreed released Satisfaction is the Death of Desire in 1997, the weight of expectation of such a statement was firmly in place.
“it feels like we are the Twitching Tongues we’ve always hoped to be.’’
For Tongues, their war cry this time around is Gaining Purpose Through Passionate Hatred. Five words which brand themselves onto your mind like a white-hot poker from Lucifer’s lair. The album artwork depicts the bands logo adorned across the page upon which a black panther has hoisted itself. ‘’This is it.’’ For frontman Colin Young, the album title has become a mantra in the wake of the naysayers.
Clearly, it took some trial and error to establish the sound that Tongues have perfected on the new record. Their demo had hardly any metallic elements, and their debut LP Sleep Therapy showcased a potent yet bluesy entrance. ‘’We were in other bands that we didn’t want to mesh sounds with at the time, but once we decided to make Twitching Tongues our primary focus, it became clear that the band we initially visualized was much heavier, so we made that happen as time went by.’’
“’Being weird and different was definitely frowned upon at the time, but eventually the trend moulded to fit us. Weird is the new normal. You’re welcome.’’
The beautifully bizarre blend of hardcore, stoner metal, doom, and whatever you want to label it has not always been an easy progression, and many (no doubt regretful) bands shunned the idea of joining Twitching Tongues on the stage, but Colin enjoys the last laugh ‘’Being weird and different was definitely frowned upon at the time, but eventually the trend moulded to fit us. Weird is the new normal. You’re welcome.’’
It’s easy to fall in line with a specific genre or sound, and transcending the constraints of sonic expectation is dangerous at worst, but infinitely fruitful when executed with flair. Gaining Purpose… draws from it’s influences to create a truly singular experience ‘’If you’re a carbon copy of something else then you need to figure some other shit out, especially if you’re a carbon copy of a modern band still doing things themselves. Be yourself!’’
Of course, the particular sound of Twitching Tongues does not mean that they have departed from their humble hardcore roots ‘’Hardcore is as much a system of ethics as it is a sound. We don’t always sound like a straight up hardcore band, but we run our band like one. Always.’’
“Nothing in the world helped me during my personal trying times as much a music did.”
Indeed, outsider cultures such as hardcore and metal inevitably attract outsiders. Such a culture is home to creatives and intellectuals. There is of course a correlation between intelligence and depression, and such themes have never been avoided by Colin ‘’Nothing in the world helped me during my personal trying times as much a music did. Find something you can connect with musically and words you can relate to personally, and you have the ultimate form of therapy. It does get better, but doesn’t always stay better, things come in waves. You’ve just got to ride them out.’’
This is only the beginning of what is sure to be a definitive year for Twitching Tongues ‘’We’re going to bust our asses this year like they’ve never been busted before. Can’t hope for or expect anything, just have to let it happen. Thank you.’’
