Whilst the world is going hysterical for Five Seconds Of Summer, Beaumont’s catchy and at times pop meets alternative rock is definitely on the same scales as the American youngsters. If you were to give their latest single, ‘Boys & Girls’ a listen, or if you managed to catch these guys recently opening for Light You Up across the UK, then you’ll be sure to agree with us that these guys well and truly are one of the best new bands in Birmingham about to break….
“Wherever I went the name seemed to be stalking me…”- Spencer Edmonds, Vocals
SO FIRST OFF, WHY THE BAND NAME BEAUMONT? YOU DO REALIZE THAT’S A PLACE IN TEXAS RIGHT?
Spencer Edmonds (Vocals): “I was aware actually – that similarity is more by accident than design. I’m aware there’s a Beaumont in California too? The word seemed to be following me around for a while, I saw it in places, people and every day objects – wherever I went the name seemed to be stalking me..
YOU RECENTLY FINISHED YOUR TOUR WITH LIGHT YOU UP. WHAT WAS IT LIKE?
“Really really great. For us to go to cities we’ve never visited before and have people singing words back to us is crazy. We’re grateful that the Light You Up boys took us out.”
ALTHOUGH LIGHT YOU UP STILL HAVE A LONG TO GO, HOW WAS IT BEING TAKEN OUT ON THE ROAD WITH A BAND LIKE THAT? IF YOUR BAND WAS IN THEIR POSITION WOULD YOU RETURN THE FAVOR?
“We learnt a lot as a band by watching them every night, they’re an impressive live act. I’ve toured with them for years and they’re honestly one of the hardest working bands I know, I’m sure their big break is just around the corner. I would 100% do the same if I was given the opportunity, it’s nice to share. I’m not sure who we’d take out though, somebody interesting and pushing boundaries I suppose – maybe that band hasn’t formed yet.”
“Without the support there would be no new music and that would make me cry….”
HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO SUPPORT NEW MUSIC?
“Vital. Without new music there would be no new music and that would make me cry. Talent isn’t subject to how big a band is; your new favourite band could well be opening up your local shows. You’d be daft to ignore new music.”
LET’S TALK ABOUT YOUR ROOTS. YOU HAIL FROM DIGBETH, WHAT’S THE SCENE LIKE AROUND THERE?
“The scene in Digbeth and Birmingham as a whole is a strange one, a mixed bag. You had indie juggernauts Peace and Swim Deep start out here a few years ago. Then you’ve got acts like Black Sabbath, Duran Duran and UB40 that all come from here, and I guess that kind of reflects the scene – we don’t really fit in. Joe, our Bassist puts on shows in the city for alternative and noise bands who wouldn’t be playing in Birmingham without him, which is pretty cool.”
AS THE BRITISH MUSIC SCENE IS BECOMING MORE AND MORE OVERUN BY POP PUNK BANDS, HOW DO YOU MAKE SURE THAT YOU GUYS CONTINUE TO STAND OUT? “We just write music that feels right to us. Having influences ranging from Joy Division, Weezer to Bruce Springsteen doesn’t allow me space to be a traditional pop punk front man or allow us to be a pop punk band. Some of the guys used to be in a hardcore band which brings heavier elements to our music too. I’m not sure what pop punk even is any more….”
FINALLY 2015 HAS BEEN A PRETTY AWESOME YEAR FOR YOU GUYS….SO HOW WILL YOU TOP IT IN 2016?
“Our 2015 only really got started in November, but the past month has been really good for us following the release of Boys And Girls. In 2016 we’re recording, releasing new music and playing a bunch of gigs – we’re going to start as we mean to go on in 2016!”
